The answer is Namibia one ex SW Africa. Weird place as many of the shops and businesses are run in German, just like being in Hamburg or wherever.

Not so weird when you consider that it was a German colony from the 1880s to 1915 (when S African forces took over as part of WW1). You similarly find areas of South Africa where Afrikaans (old Dutch) is still spoken and used throughout the local community.

Yes, Afrikaans is widely spoken of course but seeing the German bars and shop signs etc was rather ‘spooky’. ordering a couple of beers in German was just about my limit I’m afraid !
