Why are French departments shaped the way they are?
Oops - save answering this until someone has solved the Garbo question..

Well done. Spanish chicken farmer. His first attempt to work for the Brits was rejected, so he joined the Germans as a way into the British network. Remarkable for an amateur who didn't speak English. He moved to Venezuela after the war, where he died. He received an MBE from the King but it was kept quiet.

You're so close with your answer..! From Wiki: The departmental seat of government is known as the prefecture (préfecture) or chef-lieu de département and is generally a town of some importance roughly at the geographical centre of the department. This was determined according to the time taken to travel on horseback from the periphery of the department. The goal was for the prefecture to be accessible on horseback from any town in the department within 24 hours.

How about this one then:
How many facets must a diamond have to be called 'brilliant'.
I came across this useless piece of trivia when I was a boy and it's stayed lodged in my head ever since.

Yeah, I seem to recall it was to do with distances etc. In the southwest it’s uncanny that so many larger towns are about 100 kms apart, ie about four days by horse.
