How many people could spot a mason in a crowd or actually know what Freemasonry is about?

How many people could spot a mason in a crowd or actually know what Freemasonry is about? Unless they were wearing their robes then the answer would be no, my dad was a mason and I knew a few of the other ones as well, when I could drive, I used to take mum and dad to the various Balls, I could get as far as the outside door but no further, no wish to join anything.

Did you ever ask him why he was a mason?

I was asked by a mason friend if I was interested in joining. After a period of reflection I decided not to. Apparently once asked, you will never be asked again.

How would a mason in London know if you had been asked to join in say Manchester? Not being a Mason I've no idea. Taking an educated guess, national records, you become friends with someone elsewhere, they consider asking you, check the records and bingo, no askey.

No chance.
What sort of database would that be, there could be millions that have been asked and declined.
It would be bigger than the police criminal records department 🤣.

Couldn’t be one anyway as I’m female. Wasn’t it a requirement for the upper echelons of the Police?

I am not sure that I ever really knew any active masons, but, now I come to think of it, I know that my step-father’s father was a mason, I remember seeing some of his regalia, that was probably in the early 1960s. Now I come to thinking about it further I think my mother’s father may have b.even one. I have spent several years researching him and found no evidence that he was, but, I have found several indicators that he may have been. I have one picture of him that was taken before the war where is attire along with the gold watch and chain was a bit of a give away. Also, his father who died in in 1907 in one of the pubs that were run by his large family who owned lots of property and were involved in several businesses. One of his older brothers was a bricklayer before he was working as a delivery driver for a brewer in Stains and then went on to run one of the pubs that evolved from being a beer house with rooms that were let out, there were lot of brothels in the town before they were suppressed in the 1860s, ggg grandfather was a blacksmith and came to starting a large black smiths forge with several anvils in Slough which he sold in the 1890s probably owned or leased one of buildings in park street which were suppressed as the present day morals came into being. I have a picture of him with his sons who were my grandfather’s older brothers that must have been taken abt. 1880-1887. He seems to have been a man of charity as he is recorded as making several donations and gifts to the less fortunate, and providing for and speaking at church functions and the fire brigade. It is impossible to know if he was a genuine believer in salvation through charitable deeds or if there was an economic motive behind these good works. As I have said he died at a pub that was being run by one of his sons. This pub was used to hold meetings of The Goodfellows who his son was apparently an active member. I am not sure if The Goodfellows were the same as masons and have made steps to try and research any records they may have kept but thus far have made little progress.
Does anyone on this know if The Goodfellows were the same as Free Masons?

As for the police it may have been back before and just after WW2, but certainly since the 1970s it has been frowned upon.
