In hospital I asked for tea in the morning and was given a large cup of hot milk and a teabag. I now just have French style milky coffee……

I usually stick to drinking water in hospitals in both countries, and usually avoid the food in both, too, unless the vegetarian food is good. My husband is pretty good at keeping me topped up with nuts, fruit etc wherever I’m hospitalised, plus M&S sandwiches in UK hospitals.

I listened to a podcast recently made by a young German biologist who married a Maasi. She explained how it was important to appreciate the difference between different cultures and how one was no more important than another. The difference was striking, and yet she was able to accept it.

In my experience hospital food is very good here. Basically milky coffee as much bread and jam as you can eat for breakfast then basically 2 main meals with lots of fruit and veg. I had to stay a couple days in the cancer ward and the lady in the next bed wasn’t eating very much. I was very touched to see how much care was taken in trying to get her to eat. A nurse sat with her trying to feed her and the lady who was delivering the food was very concerned too.

Even more surprised when given a glass of wine with the meal. Gotta love France.

OH has been in several different hospitals and the food has always been very good. They even brought me a meal once when he was delayed coming from the bloc. We can't fault them and are equally so grateful for the superb treatment.

I cannot say that good hospital food has been OH's experience* but that just demonstrates the dangers of generalisations.
*OK but hardly good.
