I have just installed a fibre connection from my house to my watermill (260m away) and it sits in a gaine that passes under the river bed. I know that this part is full of water and that it doesn’t matter at all,. Fibre cables are quite robust and I have no doubt that once installed there would be no reason to replace it, so a squirt of PU foam is no big deal.

@polarengineer @ houpla After getting confirmation from Orange Tues evening that they wouldn't intervene my OH had a think and on Wed he bought some expanding foam and blocked up the pipe in the chemin (in the hedge) that was spewing out water which then disappeared down a green gaine .. the other end of which is in our house. Like you Houpla I was worried about interfering with Orange's property but as they are not concerned it is down to us. The torrential rain started at 5:30am today and so far OH's ministrations are working. He intends to do exactly as per suggestions on here and block any pipe/gaine he feels is adding to the problem. Thanks to all for contributing.

A couple of years ago our telephone/internet line stopped working. I called Orange and went through all the necessary motions to get it back. The Marie got involved, Orange sent their sub-contractors etc etc , to no avail , they told me that there was no telephone line going to our house! The line had been put in, by France Telecom. underground from our house to the village when the EDF had updated our electric connection, about 25 years ago.( I was there) The Orange boutique people were lovely, lent us a free air-box ( we have a professional Orange contract) After two months without the fixed line and Orange refusing to agree that we have a fixed line, I bought 50 meters of telephone cable and reconnected it myself to the closest post in the village (on top of our sheep fence posts) A week or two after I had done that , a "real" Orange engineer turned up and without talking to us started to mark out the positions of the poles for our "reconnection " I spoke with him , he had driven 150km to do this and it was his second visit and " of course the cable was from Orange"!!! Buuuut , we would have to connect the new line on posts to our underground connection box because they would not do it ! I thanked him but declined the offer, our internet/telephone has worked very well since, on the cable atop the fence posts.
EDIT: Sue ,after reading what you just posted , that is exactly what I would have done too!

Sue, good to hear you are taking a "pro-active" approach to the problem. There was one other strategy you might have adopted. Since you say all the electrical cables enter the house into this same cupboard as well as telecoms, I am thinking EDF or whatever they are called these days would be interested in the flooding as a potential safety risk. If your foam trick isn't completely successful you might approach EDF.

I'll bear all this in mind for if and when we lose our internet connection, @sue I'm glad you got sorted before the next deluge! I had a call this morning from the roofer whose devis we signed back in March for replacement of the top tiles/re-doing the faitage on our huge roof. Asked us if it was OK to start work on Monday Is it just me or is it a tad stupid to dismantle a roof in December, having had 9 months of mostly dry, warm weather (veering to very dry/hot) ? The choice of weather here in winter is relatively mild and very wet or, more rarely, sunny and freezing. Neither of them lends itself to cementing or creating possible leaks and certain heat loss from the house. What a pillock!

Bought Starlink on special offer as fed up of Orange service - they took down the internet for a week locally and suggested we pay extra for something to carry on. Put it up - much speedier but then again it would have been almost impossible to be much slower, but the storm took it out. Website is pretty crap. . Have ordered a new cable to try out to see if the problem is with that - Back to Orange - ho hum…🙄🙄😆
Internet was better 3000 feet up in the Swiss Alps, and also much of the rest of France we found during a trip in the summer, wonder why?

Does that mean you don't have an acceptable/good mobile coverage ? So a router using a 4/5G data sim is out of the question ? As we have good mobile coverage here we were thinking of such a solution if we couldn't happily resolve our situation. Re good Internet coverage .. low population area can often mean fewer services of all kinds perhaps. We were a low population area, albeit being overrun in July/August but Covid changed all that with so many people wanting to buy/live here just incase another such catastrophe arrived. Consequently our Internet and mobile situations have radically improved.

Most forums die a slow death, so few brits coming to live in France these days compared to the olden days. Even FB has gone quiet.

in 1601, an Act of Parliament was passed 'to prevent the effeminacy of men riding in coaches',
