I agree that moving out of the uk opens your eyes to the propaganda that is pumped out daily.Another thing was watching history docs on the tele without the historonics of we did this we did that.

Have to agree with virtually all the comments here, especially about that obscenity Thatcher, the public schoolboys use her to good affect - for them. France isn't perfect but what country is.
Passivity among the general population is always a very bad thing, it feeds into the greed of the small percentage of a population that would better be processed into useful material. The gilet jaune movement can never happen in the UK. I remember having lots of conversations with them. What was so positive was they had no leaders, they led themselves, that was what frightened the banker Macron.
Someone made a very good comment about not judging the UK on the mentality prevalent in the SE but there still remains that terrible passivity. What really impresses me is the civility of virtually all the French - politeness costs nothing. To pass a total stranger in the street but still wish them a good day is to me priceless. Yes it's different in the cities but that is all cities everywhere. We have an excellent relationship with all our neighbours, that disappeared decades ago when the Londoners and other strangers moved in around us on the south coast. The only bad experience we have had is the ongoing situation with my wife which I have written about on the health thread but that could have happened anywhere.
The last time I went back to the UK was 17 years ago. I miss the real ale but I don't miss what the price a pint costs now, that and the horrendous cost of virtually everything is down to the insane price of property both residential and commercial. Here I can buy a piece of land for sensible money something that was impossible even in the 1990s' anywhere in the UK. Girotoires - where we live in France they are wonderful. Real thought has gone into the designs, they are a living work of art, same as the French parks. There is a real pride, respect and they are used by the French and enjoyed. I think that sums it up nicely the French enjoy and respect their country and so do we.

The U.K. is at the disadvantage of having a different population to area of habitable land ratio and is not helped by a system so rooted in property ownership.

So many decades ago I found myself in UK without a passport and was offered help to get to Paris where there lived people with political views compatible with mine but I turned down the offer. I had family in UK where I could stay until things settled down so I stayed. Looking back, had I taken the opportunity to go to France back then my French language skills would have developed very quickly and made my subsequent life better than it has been in UK.

Great interest rates for investments though. I was lucky as my mortgage was fixed 2% at that time. There was also a great scheme that you could elect to buy shares in the Bank (Lloyds) and they were bought for you on that day and you paid back each month over four years. There was a new offer each year. At that time the price of the shares rose very well each year. You could sell at the end of each four year period. I bought our first house in France with the profits (untaxed) on that investment. Of course everyone was affected differently, it's just that that period was excellent for us. I did Motorsport and wedding photograhy at the weekends and that helped to finance my racing. Very happy times indeed.
You was lucky as we had bought a semi derelict house and land, main stream lenders in those days wouldn't touch us, we ended up at 22% and lost the house, but we dug in deep and started all over again. I used to marshal on the RAC rallies and took part in a fair bit of Hill climbing, all I could afford. I have great memories of watching the RAC rally all over the UK. Mostly Wales and Scotland. Just been watching vidéos on YouTube of the 2023 RAC historic.

I can't post a picture because I would first need to open some sort of account with a photo posting entity "in the cloud". Stuff that. No you don't. If they are on your computer you can post direct from that folder. Perhaps you can tell me how. When I click the "insert image" icon at the top of the Reply box another box pops up wanting an internet address. I don't have a website or store anything in "the cloud". I do, however have thousands of images in jpeg format. On other sites it is very simple and obvious what to do and there is a box like "attachments" or suchlike that can lead directly to image files on my PC.

I agree that moving out of the uk opens your eyes to the propaganda that is pumped out daily.Another thing was watching history docs on the tele without the historonics of we did this we did that. It's sad that so many Brits have no idea they are being 'programmed' in so many ways. Having lived in a few countries and meeting and working with people from all over the world, it's incredible that travel really does broaden the mind, irrespective of race, creed or colour. Of course you meet the occasional moron whose body has travelled but what passes for a 'mind' never has. The media has always been 'controlled' in the UK. In the 1950s' what was really happening in Kenya was deliberately suppressed. The atrocities carried out there never saw the light of day in the UK. In the 60s the fact that just across the North Sea in the Netherlands a peaceful revolution was taking place, never appeared in the papers or on the TV. The Provos/the provisional government of the Netherlands gave the Dutch elite a choice - a peaceful revolution or a violent one. If violent we will take losses but you will be eliminated completely. The Dutch are not known for being stupid people, the elite chose the peaceful way. Not known or taught in UK schools is the history of this small country. Just two generations ago - no Catholic would do business with a Protestant or visa/versa. The Netherlands (Holland is only one province) was a very conservative country. I had a Dutch friend Jack who was born and lived in a very beautiful little village that was surrounded by a moat. It was a Catholic village in the province of Brabant (Catholic). in 1976 he was woken up one morning with violent banging on his front door. He went to the door and opened it to be confronted with a very angry farmer with a double barreled shotgun stuck right in his face - "listen you bloody Catholic, stay away from my daughter" Jack had no religious beliefs at all, the farmer didn't care. People associate Amsterdam/A'dam with the whole of Dutch society, simply not true. In the Iraq invasion so much was not shown on UK TV which we saw in full on Spanish TV. The blood and guts and the atrocities were all deleted. The reason is quite simple if in the unlikely reality that the British people should ever take to the streets with real intentions, they would be totally unprepared for the 'blood and guts' that would confront them and would scurry back to their little houses and behave themselves. It's all about control by the elite in the UK and always has been.

You may have a point. Brainwash. British being programmed to "know their place", etc. I see so many outrageous events and so many examples of inept and corrupt government mismanagement and wonder why the British people just mutter something under their breath and look the other way. I tend to think the French would be out in the streets voicing their disapproval. They will take it up to a point and then get off their butts and make their feelings known.

Then click on 'Add files' which should allow you to select JPEGs from your computer. Click on 'Insert' and when the photo's uploaded, click on 'Done'..then post as usual. HTH...

I'm only going digital so I can get my music on a mini PC and listen through h/phones. Then I can get rid of all my LPs/d/drive decks/big speakers etc. It's lot of work using a RCP to keep them clean, then there's the storage, not being able to arrange insurance because I bought a lot s/hand which are worth serious money and one day I may decide to live in a motor home. Quality MC cartridges aren't cheap and they have to be replaced quite frequently. I totally agree about mobile phones, I frequently go out without it or it rings somewhere I can't hear what's being said. My cousin's daughter has done a lot of travelling and a year ago she went to the States and one place she stayed and worked at (she's into horses) was way out in Arizona - she left early because it had no wi-fi connection - withdrawal systems.

I totally agree with iolar about travelling broadening your views and opinions of other countries. France is much more suited to my social mindset than the UK - especially after 13 years of Tory rule. I don’t understand people living here, benefiting from the socialism embedded in the culture here but being against socialism….🤷♀️🤷♀️
