Amazing eh ? The conversation breaks down into where the carrots, potatoes and sprouts are cheapest , some buy in pubs ( I expect without tax and quality control) some smuggle across the border not worrying about diseases that may be brought in. But all come to France because the standard of living is better , not for the cheap veg. Add everything up and divide by the joy of living in France and France wins hands down every time, n'est ce pas? Bringing in diseases ? - well in my opinion -no. All plastic wrapped (disgusting, I hear you say). Straight to our kitchen and eaten only by ourselves. Not sure how we are contaminating, but open to explanation. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn't, but it was more for convenience as we had to buy a picnic (oh no - more contamination) for our journey. As well as suffering 2 bereavements and a funeral in the last 3 weeks and being away for that amount of time, we didn't want to have to go out shopping for food and get caught up in the Christmas rush. Oh ye who judges. NB As I read the rules and regs for bringing in edible vegetables for personal use - they are permitted, so not smuggling. I am sure that all smugglers read the rules and regs , I am not judging , the authorities know what is best and will do what is needed, if and when . It would be terrible to have to go without the sprouts at the birth of Jesus celebrations ( please excuse me , we are not believers but still good people)

I dislike them with a vengence , ever since my father tried to force me to eat them cold for breakfast when I was a kid , because i wouldn't eat them warm for dinner !

The price of caulis (and all other fruit and veg) might just have a positive effect on OHs willingness to pull his finger out and help in the garden next year Every cloud has a silver lining.... No chance........... I suspect you're right Merry Christmas xx

groceries.asda.com/dept/fruit-veg-flowers/vegetables-potatoes/1215686352935-1215665891579Utter tosh again. All supermarkets have plentiful supplies of veg etc. Piled high at present. Why would they sell at 15p a kilo if there were shortages? Maybe a Brexit Bonus, certainly not that price in the EU and fresher to boot. It doesn’t fit the anti British anti Brexit rubbish though does it. I suggest you get some new friends who will tell you the truth. I'm fairly sure you cannot speak for every retail UK outlet and the fact you attack a fellow member rather than being polite and courteous weakens your point of view in my opinion. And you forgot to mention Canada told you to forget a tariff free trade deal yesterday. Some lying moron's should have checked out the water for free trade agreements before cutting off such a large trading group. Enjoy the festive season.
Nice to see the Christmas spirit is alive and kicking.
Merry Christmas to all contributors.

I visit supermarkets a couple of times a week and there are often gaps on the fruit and veg aisles, the prices are much lower than France (a cauliflower is less than £1 in Tesco for example) even though most of the produce comes from the EU.

Lidl or Aldi (I never know which is which) have been doing some sort of cheap veg promotion that has prompted to big 4 to follow - at least temporarily - as they try to maintain market share. In fact Lidl have reported a £70 million loss this year as the big boys fight back.
The arable crops in East Anglia have suffered badly this year from sodden land; brassicas, potatoes, root veg all poor harvests. Caulis have failed to thrive and it's hard to find one with the heart bigger than an apple.
We have 10-acre field next to us which had a cabbage crop that was so poor it hasn't even been harvested and is now feeding a herd of sheep.
So a. There is less veg harvested this year; b. The quality is poorer than normal so: c. Prices are higher and shelves are emptier. There is an increase in imports which partially compensates
So while you can blame the EU, Tories, rapacious supermarkets, Brexit and all the rest, the root cause (no pun intended) is the dismal autumn weather.

I did not come to France for cheap veg or to save on the cost of washing, the blue work clothes was a facture in the move though. More like a deduction impots for your work clothes😉😀

‘ Might be a bit OTT there I suspect you cannot be sure that ALL supermarkets have “piled high” plentiful supplies of veg. You are no doubt nipping to and fro Europe to compare freshness. So it would seem there is no cost of living crisis in UK.’ Maybe it is possible to get the ingredients to a meal more reasonably in the U.K. However, that gain is wiped out when it comes to paying for the energy and space to cook them. # ’ I did not come to France for cheap veg or to save on the cost of washing, the blue work clothes was a facture in the move though. ‘ I just wanted to be a slave to the land and government.
