Incredible who pays 5 euros for a cauliflower yesterday over pre Christmas drinks at one of finest cafe's in Aubusson Brits who are here for Christmas said they would not pay 5 euros at Carrefour for the said vegetable. I have never bought one probably cheaper to grow them. I bought oranges which claim to be from America they were not cheap but hopefully will be tasty. Looking at food prices in ads in the UK France still looks expensive for food.

Very expensive in France for veg and our local Hyper U are shameless of dressing up old veg to look like new, cutting back old leaves etc, I am not allowed to buy veg in France as I do not inspect them like a forensic scientist, many a time I have come back with a cauli or some fruit, the cauli looked ok to me but was rotten inside the peaches were nice on the top of the basket but sludge underneath.
We live in an area of the UK that still grows what I call proper Sunday lunch veg, in fact our local spit and sawdust pub on the 'lanes' sells veg, £5 gets you a big carrier bag of veg to last a week !

It is not easy for vegetable growers when it rains non-stop for 4 weeks . Obviously the UK veg is better and cheaper ? Cheaper to buy in a bar too !

Just as well I hate cauliflower (and to be honest, quite a few other vegetables). This week has been one of calls to and from OH's friends and family in UK. Every single one has commented on rising prices, reduced choice, and partially empty shelves. The empty shelf issue started soon after Brexit.

groceries.asda.com/dept/fruit-veg-flowers/vegetables-potatoes/1215686352935-1215665891579Utter tosh again. All supermarkets have plentiful supplies of veg etc. Piled high at present. Why would they sell at 15p a kilo if there were shortages? Maybe a Brexit Bonus, certainly not that price in the EU and fresher to boot. It doesn’t fit the anti British anti Brexit rubbish though does it. I suggest you get some new friends who will tell you the truth.

Maybe the partially empty shelves are due to pre Christmas, daft (end of the world) overpurchasing?

Might be a bit OTT there I suspect you cannot be sure that ALL supermarkets have “piled high” plentiful supplies of veg. You are no doubt nipping to and fro Europe to compare freshness. So it would seem there is no cost of living crisis in UK.

We stopped off in a Tesco on our way back to France on Thursday and found carrots, potatoes, parsnips, brussels at 15p per bag (clubcard prices). We picked them up for our xmas dinner taking the chance that they wouldn't be confiscated. No way could they be produced and packaged for that price.

I'm fairly sure you cannot speak for every retail UK outlet and the fact you attack a fellow member rather than being polite and courteous weakens your point of view in my opinion. And you forgot to mention Canada told you to forget a tariff free trade deal yesterday. Some lying moron's should have checked out the water for free trade agreements before cutting off such a large trading group. Enjoy the festive season.

Amazing eh ? The conversation breaks down into where the carrots, potatoes and sprouts are cheapest , some buy in pubs ( I expect without tax and quality control) some smuggle across the border not worrying about diseases that may be brought in. But all come to France because the standard of living is better , not for the cheap veg. Add everything up and divide by the joy of living in France and France wins hands down every time, n'est ce pas?

Add everything up and divide by the joy of living in France and France wins hands down every time, n'est ce pas? Bringing in diseases ? - well in my opinion -no. All plastic wrapped (disgusting, I hear you say). Straight to our kitchen and eaten only by ourselves. Not sure how we are contaminating, but open to explanation. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn't, but it was more for convenience as we had to buy a picnic (oh no - more contamination) for our journey. As well as suffering 2 bereavements and a funeral in the last 3 weeks and being away for that amount of time, we didn't want to have to go out shopping for food and get caught up in the Christmas rush. Oh ye who judges. NB As I read the rules and regs for bringing in edible vegetables for personal use - they are permitted, so not smuggling.

The price of caulis (and all other fruit and veg) might just have a positive effect on OHs willingness to pull his finger out and help in the garden next year Every cloud has a silver lining....

I did not come to France for cheap veg or to save on the cost of washing, the blue work clothes was a facture in the move though.
