I saw on the box somewhere that if you have a sip of red wine before eating a sprout they will taste much better. Personally I like sprouts (and red wine).

Back to cauliflowers if you are stupid enough to pay 5€ plus for a vegatable which is smack in season, then you deserve to be ripprd off, no sympathy from me whatsoever.

I agree , and most can live without cauliflower, but if the fields are flooded then there will be a lot less to make the same money for the farmers. Jen showed me a photo this morning of a supermarket in Yorkshire ( Asda) that are giving away carrots, so it all depends on transport, possibily? Following on with that line of discussion , who actually makes the money on the fresh produce and what are the consequences if it is not sold ? Farmers need to make money to cover their rising costs , everything has gone up in price (diesel, seed, fertiliser, taxes) the last few years , so eventually if they cannot live from their produce , they will quit and do something else. At the moment , the move is to plant trees to help the environment , but that doesn't produce food for the masses, so if people won't pay the rising prices for fresh veg. then the price will only increase!
P.S. we will be planting cauliflower next week .

Its the middle and shops that make the profit.I understand you arguement but the price of a barrel of oil is around 79$a barrel and has been for over a month the lower cost of fuel has not been passed to the consumer.

It's not just oil prices but all costs generally. Farming is investing and hoping that the weather and all the other unknowns leave enough profit to invest for the next year. Many farmers are upto their necks in debt and just one bad year is enough to finish them.
But back to cauliflower. Most in France comes from Brittany , and the weather wasn't good in Brittany this Autumn , so the cauliflowers didn't make enough roots and then didn't grow to be ready for December , but now the price will go down and we can all eat cauliflower cheese!

The OH read out an article this morning about Tescos turkeys upsetting people because they turned out to be rotten and very stinky. One customer pre-ordered £53 for one and couldn't use it. No replacements available at the last minute so was given a refund and a gift card. Of course its all lies, and there are no shortages in UK at all............. allegedly.

Farming is investing your life in the soil and livestock , hard work and long hours . Gambling is taking a chance on making a quick profit , no farmer makes a quick profit.

There are a lot of government approved rip-offs going on, same as when the Euro was introduced but to be fair, cauliflowers in France are mainly grown in one area and it has had terrible weather. There is no excuse for a lot of veg that comes from Andalucia and Murcia. It is grown under plastic with lots of banned chemicals - caveat emptor, we know, we lived in Andulucia and used to read about alcaldes/maries being caught by the guardia civil with said banned chemicals.
The true rate of inflation is far, far higher than any government in Europe will admit (as always). I havn't been back to the island in 17 years but listen to the UK news via Murdoch Speak/Sky and the emasculated BBC and read my old local rag, the Evening Argus and the pale pink Guardian so know what's going on.
France is the fourth largest producer of wheat in the world, indeed apart from exotic spices and fruit is self sufficient in food. When we gave up on Spain in 2009 we arrived with 25L of olive oil in 5L plastic containers. We paid between €11 and €13 Euros per 5L. Last year was a disaster for olive oil production in Greece/Italy/North Africa and Spain and it's only going to get worse. I used to love olives but the French ones use far more salt than is nec. to cure the olives, so I stopped buying years ago.
