Just as long as you avoid walking on an autoroute.

Not unusual for me to do 20K a day even though I'm not working, living close to the centre of the city and being able to walk everywhere has meant a reduction in weight and waist size which can only be a good thing.

I was doing pretty well until a back problem crept up on me. Now I can only manage short slow walks that don't involve hills. I live in a very hilly town where I used to enjoy roaming everywhere with my dog. However, nowhere does it say they have to be fast steps so maybe my slow 2kms helps. All these reports assume people want to live longer. That depends on quality of life.

All these reports assume people want to live longer. That depends on quality of life. That's very true, you haven't given up trying to stay healthy though which many people would in your situation. One of the driver's for moving back was to help my aged Mother who is house bound with zero mobility. She has never really been that active and following a couple of falls a few years ago refused all help to get her on her feet again, consequently, she sits slouched in her chair all day and just eats to relieve the boredom. She is now obese and the carers who go in several times a day cannot lift her up without the use of a hoist, I have tried to reason with her and regulate how much she eats but that has just led to arguments so I've just let her be. Her biggest dread is going into a care home but that is inevitable now, all she seems concerned about is that is plenty of cake, biscuits and chocolate in the cupboard. Having witnessed my Mother's rapid decline has made me determined to keep healthy for as long as I can.

Having a dog forces you to get out and walk too. Personally speaking I find it perks me up a treat even when I just feel like blobbing on the sofa….

My previous dogs were never taken for walks. They were very small Yorkies and a quick run around the garden to find the right spot for a deposit was quite enough. I have a Jack Russell-Fauve de Bretagne cross now and I have again dodged the bullet. He's happy enough to cover the perimeter of our 2 acre garden on his own but I usually accompany him in the morning just to see what the wild critters have been up to during the night. Despite living on pain killers for years I am still able to walk (not run) a fair distance but have far more pressing activities to spend my time and energy doing. Judging by the numbers of people on "place in the sun" type programs that say they want to spend time "walking" I guess they find something enjoyable in the pursuit, and won't be spending every day fixing up a ruin or digging a hole for a fosse.

Know what you mean aardvark, sometimes all our energy gets used up with other things too, especially in the summer with the demands of the garden….

Sounds like she cannot feed herself so who's enabling her overeating?

Sounds like she cannot feed herself so who's enabling her overeating? Ultimately it's me, I buy the food that she asks for and set it out for the carers either in the fridge or cupboard, at nearly 90 she's coming to the end of her life and has effectively given up. I don't get any pleasure in seeing her in the state she's in but the alternative to letting her eating crap all day is to argue with her every time I see her which would not be good for either of us.

all she seems concerned about is that is plenty of cake, biscuits and chocolate in the cupboard. It's very difficult when someone's only remaining pleasure comes from eating in spite of it harming them.

My dad lived to turned 100, his advice was to get up from your chair and do something every hour, I follow that advice.
