Can someone remind me of the St Swithin's Day prediction, here in France it is St Donald's day, and as Donald is a duck, amongst other things, rain may appeal to him in France. I thought it was Saint Médard ??
No, I meant St Swithin's day in the UK was 15 July, in France 15 July is for St Donald.

Hot and humid near the south coast of England; I’ve been trying to stay in the shade as much as possible.

Scorching here in Selby! So hot we had to go to our local pub because the UK Government's advice is to drink plenty of fluids. I am totally fluidised with beer!

On transats in the garden this afternoon, with a 25€ inflatable child's pool half-filled for cooling off in.

It's been scorching here all afternoon. The forecast shows the temperature creeping up to top 35C on Thursday. I shan't like that one little bit.

I went for a swim late this morning .. the sea was 18° but felt like someone had added ice-cubes, as the air temp was almost 30° at 11ish .. since then I have mostly stayed inside as the temp rose to just shy of 34° this pm. Making a second batch of courgette chutney - yum, yum. It's still 30° now .. at gone 7pm.
Edit: all temps taken in the deep shade. I have no idea what temp it must be in the sun.

It's 30° here at 19.15. I went for a dip in our pool an hour ago which was very refreshing.
I think we're set for hot and sunny this week

The simplest blow up pool is just the thing for sitting in and splashing cooling water over a hot body.

Hoooo luxury! Back in UK, we used to fill a plastic dustbin with tap water and take it in turns to sit in it On the three days a year when it got hot enough The 12 x 6m in-ground jobbie here is much appreciated, especially being so far from the coast. No sand, no waves, no screaming children...couldn't ask for more!

Can someone remind me of the St Swithin's Day prediction, here in France it is St Donald's day, and as Donald is a duck, amongst other things, rain may appeal to him in France. St Swithin was the Bishop of Winchester, who asked not to be buried in a prominent place at Winchester Cathedral, but outside in a simple tomb "where the sweet rain of heaven may fall upon my grave". But later his remains were moved inside and afterwards there was a huge storm and rained for a long time afterwards, so the legend grew: "St Swithin's Day, if it does rain Full forty days, it will remain St Swithin's Day, if it be fair For forty days, t'will rain no more" And therein lies a grain of truth - especially if we interpret 40 in the biblical usage, where attached to time it does not necessarily mean the number between 39 and 41 but rather a long period of time. Israelites 40 years in the desert; Jesus in fasting and meditation for 40 days etc.. Most years (but perhaps not this one) by mid July the jet stream will have established a stable summer pattern.& If it is to the south of the UK then you get unstable weather and lots of rainy days. If it is to the north you get prolonged sunny days. So the weather on St. Swithins can be indicative of what id to follow.
