I need a new printer, and I only have a tablet. I went into leclerc Saturday and was told I would need a PC in order to set up a new printer. Is this right? I thought you just downloaded an app and connected. I'm pretty backward in these things. Can anyone advise please. Thanks.

I have a Brother wifi printer that didn’t need a PC to set up. It’s only ever been used using the Brother printer App on my iPad.

I print from our HP Deskjet printer via WIFI using their App on my iPad. I think whoever you talked to in LeClerc hadn’t a clue what they were talking about..

There are a few here which are compatible with a Samsung smartphone, so should be equally compatible with a tablet:

I think you're right Jackie. He went on to sell me ink cartridges which don't fit my existing printer, and of course now they've been opened I can't take them back. I can do without this right now.

mangetout, I replied at the same time as you so you might have missed it, just above your last response.

An Ipad (Apple) usually need a printer compatible with their airprint system, so you need to check the printer has this. Using an app from the printer manufacturer is usually very messy.

They usually have much better knowledge of their products, unless you are very unlucky. In fact any shop selling computers/tablets would be able to offer their advice. It is obvious the LeClerc assistant had no idea what they were talking about.

My experience of Darty is that they are more interested in chatting amongst themselves than helping customers; Boulanger are good and the bearded guy in my local Leclerc is excellent.

You can’t print simply by printing pressing the print button in some situations but a huge number of printers work through apps provided by the manufacture. There is no need for an AirPrint printer.

I have an HP office jet 8022 and it does not need a PC for it to work, i can print from my iPad or iPhone direct to the printer wirelessly…..I believe all the 8000 series will do that, whomever gave you that advice needs their mouth washing out with carbolic soap 🤣

Just to add: If the budget runs to it, think about getting an Epson Ecotank. There are no cartridges, just refillable cuves. The printer comes ready-filled and with a set of ink refill bottles too. Everything they claim about it has proved correct, regarding economy, quality and convenience. It was 4 times the price of a cheapie cartridge printer, but as cartridges can be more expensive than the actual printer, it's already paid for itself over the last 5 years. It works perfectly via WiFi with PC, Laptop and phone.

Certainly the one I bought about a decade ago did need a pc. (Unlike the newer ones, they were a nightmare, it was quicker to go and get the printer and carry it to the pc)
