I've never been sure what mesclun is and until recently I believed it to be a mix of lettuces. Now I'm confused again as houpla can apparently go to their polytunnel and pick 'rocket, mache or mesclun'. So, is it a distinct variety?

Its a mix. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesclun but don't get it mixed up with Mescaline

The only lettuce I'd like to be able to grow is Iceberg but it just doesn't work here, so I have to make do with 'salad leaves'.

Or grow them interior under LED lights year round..

Let's just say we don't share the same views on growing methods and leave it at that.

Sorry, I missed your responses about mesclun! Iceberg is a great lettuce - and that's saying something as I'm not a big lettuce fan. My absolute favourite was one I haven't seen for sale for many, many years - Webb's Wonderful. From a google search just now I gather it is in fact a variety of Iceberg and that seed is still available in the UK. But from what you say, I guess that would be hard to grow here too.

Hi Veem, it might be worth a try in spring and autumn, but that's not necessarily when you want lettuce, is it? The hardest part is to stagger production, I find. It's all or nothing! That's why the cut-and-come-again leaves are useful. Not exciting, but useful

I gave up trying to grow edible things a while ago. I planted a patch of broad beans, spent hours weeding the patch, trying to keep blackfly at bay and watering. In the end though the drought won and we had precisely one meal from them before they all went floury. It just wasn't worth the hours spent on them.

The lack of knowledge on this thread leaves me wondering if any of you actually live here and have experienced real France.Mcdonalds sandwiches are always fresh and if ordering on the computer screen you can customise to have exactly what one wants.

Over the years, I've learnt to get most 'cool climate' veg going in autumn so they produce in spring before the heat strikes. A lot depends on your local climate, though It's true that veggie-growing is very intensive. A lot of folks seem to be going for the raised-bed no-dig method round here. It takes a fair bit of setting up and you need an ongoing supply of compost, manure or whatever. Not a problem if you've got horses, though?
