The lack of knowledge on this thread leaves me wondering if any of you actually live here and have experienced real France.Mcdonalds sandwiches are always fresh and if ordering on the computer screen you can customise to have exactly what one wants. Just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards: Poo found on every touchscreen tested

Yesterday I accompanied daughter and grandson to the kids play place and we had the obligatory McDoo afterwards...the chicken wrap I had was very tasty, but the soft swirly ice-cream with chocolate sauce and nuts was devine!

Near Plancoet in Brittany there is a drive in Baguetterie (probably spelt wrong) and if you are lucky they will make your baguette with your choice of filling there and then, however there is a skulky young lad (I think son of owner), who just points at the pre-filled baguettes and that's all he will offer, if there none made up he just shruggs and walks off.

Have you ever thought about applying for a job with the Brittany Tourist Board? It sounds delightful

I gave up trying to grow edible things a while ago. I planted a patch of broad beans, spent hours weeding the patch, trying to keep blackfly at bay and watering. In the end though the drought won and we had precisely one meal from them before they all went floury. It just wasn't worth the hours spent on them. Was that in spring or autumn? Over the years, I've learnt to get most 'cool climate' veg going in autumn so they produce in spring before the heat strikes. A lot depends on your local climate, though It's true that veggie-growing is very intensive. A lot of folks seem to be going for the raised-bed no-dig method round here. It takes a fair bit of setting up and you need an ongoing supply of compost, manure or whatever. Not a problem if you've got horses, though? Definitely Spring. It was a summer drought that ruined them.

We tend to grow cut and come again varieties as opposed to whole lettuces although I have grown little gems which have been successful.Salad leaves don’t do well at all in high summer tending to bolt or wilt in my experience. We also grow lots of herbs to add to a mixed salad and things like celeri á couper (tasty leaves that test mildly of celery) and roquette. For leaves I grow red and green salad bowl and this autumn am trying out japanese mustard leaves which don’t mind cooler weather (plenty of seed varieties available on the internet).
As said already we love a herby salad so add the leaves of chives, marjoram, coriander, parsley, chervil and oseille.
I grow lots in cheap plastic window boxes and pots which I can move around if the slugs find them which they invariably do.
At the moment still getting lots of salad and herbs from the garden and greenhouse. I go out with my little scissors and come back with a bowl of mixed salad leaves and herbs. Really tasty too and much less boring than just lettuce....
