Given that English is the second language of most of those who try to cross the Channel, it's hardly surprising that that's where they want to go.

Yes, indeed it is awful, and ibis is right we down near the Med is hearing of similar tragedies almost daily.
What annoys me is that it takes this tragedy on their doorstep to get the UK politicians - such as they are - to get up and be sanctimonious about it. That ghastly Howie woman was giving it lots of mouth on Sky just now, spouting off how the French need to take responsibilty. No we (as a taxpayer, I use we..)do not. A deal was struck up way back where the UK paid France for some security but the amount barely covers the erection of security fences around Calais. Plus migrants amassing at Calais are givin the chance to make their application in France, but turn the gesture down as it is the UK they particularly want to get to, depite the risks.
France has its own problems in border control and just a few more borders to patrol. The UK stupidly voted to take back control (and even the Howie woman, a leading brexit numbhead, admitted the UK has not yet taken back control) so now it is time for these goddam brexit people to pull their fingers out, get a grip, and start taking responsibility for what they voted for. But no, all we get is more and more UK whinging.

Why is everyone buying in to the fallacy that all these asylum seekers want to go to UK? Of the millions of refugees only 25k have come to UK, the lowest figure for any major European nation. Yet, with typical national narcissism, the government, press and much of the population think that everyone wants to reach their promised land
Yes, the people who drown crossing the Channel are part of a greater tragedy but only a small part.
Perspective seems to have disappeared.

Perspective seems to have disappeared. I do not think that it is thought all asylum seekers want to reach the UK. I am sure everyone realises it is only those that want the UK, and ergo, the ones heading for Calais. I fear that many average Britons do not comprehend the bigger picture such is their sheltered existence, and to them the only migrants are those congregating around Calais.

Indeed. Some of them need reminding that at the height of the Syrian crisis, Germany took in around one million refugees. The UK promised to take in just twenty odd thousand, and then over five years and I think they have not lived up to the promise.

I heard on Radio 4 this morning that only 3% of refugees come to the UK and then seek asylum, they could not give a figure for the number who are here illegally.

If Boris and the corupt company he helps get super rich spent more time in the past making sure aid got to the people who needed it and kept the western armies out of places they should not be going then there would be less people looking to leave there countries. As for the ass of a conservitive MP that said we need to send the army to control the French beaches or Boris wanting to send the police instead. It"s not a criminal offence for anyone to have or put a boat in the water. They are just playing to the public.

The Calais press is reporting the boat may have been hit by a merchant vessel.
A person on today's BBC news says to let them in a controlled manner and hear their claim for asylum. That begs the question of what is done with those whose claims are rejected and those who are economic migrants. Where to send them?
