I agree with Plog ,if your neighbours are shouting that their house is on fire, you don’t calmly make a cup of tea

Correct, whatever the numbers, whatever the actual outcome France and any other country who had arrivals from Southern Africa will only be lagging a few days.
After spending so long criticising the UK for not taking timely measures they could not be seen to do anything other than what they are, I dont think it will make the slightest difference and I hope they follow the UK's lead in acknowledging that when the numbers in France get equally high there is no further point for the restriction as the UK did with Covid hotel quarantine.

Google translation of the announcement on London Consulate web site (no English version available yet) uk.ambafrance.org/Derniere-minute-Changement-de-regles-a-partir-du-18-decembreFrom Saturday December 18, 2021 (midnight) the following rules will apply to all travelers from the UK, whether or not they are vaccinated : Obligation to have a compelling reason to go to or come from the United Kingdom, for unvaccinated people as well as vaccinated people. These reasons are indicated in the list in the appendix and at the following address: www.interieur.gouv.fr/Actualites/L-actu-du-Ministere/Attestation-de-deplacement-et-de-voyage . They will not allow travel for tourist or professional reasons. The fact of being French constitutes a compelling reason for returning to France. Also, their spouse (married, civil union, or cohabiting partner (on presentation of proof of community of life)) and their children will still be able to come to France. Necessity for vaccinated people to initially present a negative PCR or TAG (antigenic) test of less than 24 hours . Obligation for all travelers from the United Kingdom to register, prior to their trip, on a digital platform allowing in particular to enter the address of their stay in France. This platform will make it possible to generate prefectural orders fixing the obligation of isolation in the place of their choice for all travelers, unvaccinated as vaccinated. This isolation obligation may be lifted from 48 hours, subject to being able to justify a negative PCR or TAG (antigen) test. Controls will be organized to ensure the proper implementation of these measures. The Government also calls on travelers who had planned to visit the United Kingdom to postpone their trip. Please note that self-administered tests, the results of which are not certified by a laboratory (eg tests provided free of charge by the NHS), are not authorized for travel. The NHS says it will not perform any tests to travel. It is therefore advisable to resort to private structures offering a similar service. There is no specific test linked to the new variant that has been identified. The pre-departure test carried out on French territory can be used for your return to France if it meets the time criteria (less than 24 hours) and contains the necessary information (type of test, date and time, name of the laboratory, your name, first name, date of birth…). Please note: We urge you to also contact your travel company to obtain details of their transport conditions.

I don't really see the point of this. Omicron is already in France. Locking the stable door. Could it be a bit of retaliation for fishing licenses? It is not a move to prevent it. As you say it is already here. It is however move to slow down the spread. The real danger based on what we know at the moment (which is still limited) is the speed of propagation and the impact on health services. Look at it like this. The ocean is full of water and waves hit the coast every day with (in the main) limited impact. But if all that water ends up on the coast at once as in a Tsunami or bad storm and damage can be immense. In both cases the total amount of water is the same. The problem is that it all arrives at the same time in a tsunami.

Meanwhile Belgium, Germany Spain and Italy Ireland can all come and go freely. I really don’t see how restricting a few hundred Brits who have been tested virus free is going to make much difference if the virus is as infectious as being stated

If nothing else these attract rather more than a few hundred Brits to the ski slopes and remember in Feb 2020 it was British skiers who brought the Wuhan variant to France.

I suspect the French reasonings are basically two fold...
The massive rise in cases in the UK
The removal of all countries from the UK red list, meaning people can easily bypass the French liste rouge.
