There's a discussion at the end of the "Testing required ..." thread.

Ooops, sorry! please delete this thread then FFS Crystal I think it deserved a new thread other than trolling thru 9 pages of testing requirements to get to todays news which is only about testing, not a total ban.

Not a total ban, no, but effectively stopping tourists coming to France from the UK at the moment for simple tourism/holiday mode.

Not strictly true. The UK now effectively joins countries such as S Africa, Zimbabwe etc. on the Scarlet list of countries.

Is there a Scarlet list or do you mean "even worse than Red!"?
A couple of days ago I said that I could not see France singling out the UK alone for punitive treatment, the worst that could happen would be the UK would join the Red List, - I got that very wrong didn't I!!!

There is a scarlet list and yes I think it means exactly "even worse than red". I think the scarlet list came about as a result of Omicron on 4th December.

Here is a thought - the French 'Motif Imperieux' for going (or not) to UK is 'Ressortissant étranger rejoignant son pays'.
Should this be interpreted as a person(s) going there to remain and not for just a visit?

When the measures were in place before they were not preventing anyone from returning to their country were they minded to do so, after all it was putting any potential problem elsewhere, the importance is controlling the return of French residents from other countries.
People determined will make the interpretation to suit themselves, it's not as if you even have to tick the box on an attestation now, they will book, check in and no questions will be asked, if they were it would be by the UK border control which is at the destination port in the UK and they would probably cop out and put the responsability on the carriers to do at check in.
