I have to say that, having watched nightly coverage on the changing situation since the invasion began, there seems to be a lot of images shown in repetition, and which were shown on previous reports, and the actual damage and destruction shown seems to be much less than it ought to be given the vocal coverage of the situation.

I think Putin thought .. or wanted to believe .. that Ukraine would fall easily on being invaded. He wasn't expecting such a fight-back from the army and the people. So I think he has kept back from the heavy stuff up till now. Apparently he is very cross at the lack of progress so I feel he might up his game very soon.

The Ukrainians look as if they have a pre-prepared game (no surprise) that Putin's generals had not considered. They seem to be prepared to sacrifice territory but will defend cities vigorously. The Putin plan to knock out major military centres and the smash the Ukrainian army is having limited success. Centres close to cities have been heavily defended while others have been let go. I suspect a form of scorched earth policy. Stretch the Russians out to the cities, which they will surround, and then hit their logistics supply lines to keep those siege troops supplied. It becomes a battle of who is better supplied. The besieged or those carrying out the siege. By a tick the Ukrainians may have it since it seems they have planned for it but Putin has not. If the Russians entre the cities they will be faced with a block by block insurgent war with many more casualties and the further condemnation of the world as innocent civilians fall victim.

All that we can do is hope that exile is close to the mark and this will end with a righteous outcome.
I think it will depend on the location of what stockpiles the Ukrainians have stored, and perhaps, true Russian sentiments

I agree, Putin is off his head the west should have said if you do not turn your army around we will wipe them out. His family and friends have stolen so much money they would not try to wipe out the world. He is like a forum troll but has power.

I think it will depend on the location of what stockpiles the Ukrainians have stored, and perhaps, true Russian sentiments The key to this is what will last longest, the Ukrainian supplies and will to continue, or Putin's support. Sadly every Russian body bag will slightly weaken the Putin position. [ I say sadly because it is a life lost without real cause.]

Successful invasions of whole countries are not just a matter of rolling along in your tanks like they do in the movies.
It's a little over 60 hrs since the invasion began. That's a blink of an eye. Troops have to be fed, watered, need sleep etc. Their equipment needs resupply. While Ukraine could be rendered down to a pile of dust with missiles and bombs, I suspect Putin wants the infrastructure as undamaged as possible.
The unknown quantities in the equation are the stomach the Russian troops have for fighting and whether the Ukrainians can maintain morale and cohesion.
Small countries can resist big ones. The Winter War - Nov 39 to Mar 40 - is a classic example. The Finns resisted and repulsed the Russians.

Thanks, quilbert, a bit like the NZ pronunciation of Kiev, then.
