I would say a "no brainer" ( strange expression would be to have the money transferd directly into a French bank account , but then we are not as rich as you SS!

have the money transferd directly into a French bank account , OK for state pension but not often an option with private pension providers.

I would say a "no brainer" is to not put all your eggs in a basket where a utility like EDF can keep taking money out of your account months after you have ended your contract making you subject to penalties for being overdrawn. They can't do that with a UK account. Your French account can be blocked at the drop of a hat.

Had no problems with any of the French direct debits , but then we live here permantly. We have a few accounts in France , one to pay the bills, one for savings and one for card use, no problems.

A hearty "well done" to you, and the majority of French account holders who never have any trouble with banks. It would seem that being a full time resident for nearly ten years when it happened to me didn't meet the required standard. And those who posted on expat forums around that time who experienced the same treatment.

1.15207 with Wise right now. I have changed up a small amount , but personally feel that it could move higher over the rest of the year. Bon courage

My advice to anyone who is changing supplier or moving would be to cancel the direct debit months in advance. You're perfectly within your rights to do so. That way the unfortunate case you describe can't happen. I pay all my bills by TIP, with the exception of the tax man which you can't avoid, and EDF. I am about to cancel my direct debit with them because I will probably move soon.

CA is often quoted as one that gives many problems but to date we have had no problems in 20+ years. That may be because we bank with a franchise close to the German border and a lot of Germans have historically held foreign accounts (perhaps to hide some ill gotten gains from the German taxman - certainly true in the past before cross border cooperation). They would certainly not tolerate anything that was not strictly to the book.

the majority of French account holders who never have any trouble with banks Wish I could include myself in that number. I think with the Banque Postale it could be the minority. They are truly awful. The faults on their website defy belief and they do nothing to correct them and don't reply to messages. I've chosen the bank I want to change to but I keep putting off making that final leap for fear of the chaos that might ensue. It doesn't sit well with trying to keep my life simple.

I would suggest you take the plunge .. especially as the new Bank you've chosen does all the hard graft so you should be OK. Which Bank have you chosen instead of La Poste ?

Which Bank have you chosen instead of La Poste ? It's Monabanq. Best online bank for customer service for several years running. It's when things go wrong you need them to be on the ball unlike Banque Postale. But now I see you have to choose their most expensive option if you send a lot of virements, which I do. So ... may need to think again.

Have a look at Fortuneo .. they seem to be better rated overall than MonaBanq. Here I will declare an interest - they were recommended to me years ago. I have no complaints about them but I don't send many virements from my online account. We have a joint on-the-ground Bank which deals with all that ..

Also consider Boursorama, we've been very happy with them for several years now.
Virements are free (I'm not aware of any limit to the number) and instant up to 2000 Euros.

quilbert - your post made me have a look at Fortuneo and I found this : De 6 000 € par opération dans la limite de 10 000 € par semaine. De 5 opérations par jour.
Interesting how the Banks vary, isn't it ?
