This kitten turned up yesterday no sign of its mother yet. It's small and the picture is out of focus as we cannot get near it, it looks cute but most kittens look cute. it's got water down and had a few very small meals which get eaten in seconds hopefully the mother will turn up or its been dumped by our gate. edit. It was not the gate that dumped the cat probably a human.

Home for about four day's it is in a tool come storage outhouse. It's not like the wild cats we had in our garden in the Limousin a few years ago they would not come near you this one is hungry and after you put food down its out quickly but you need to keep your distance or it runs off.

It's very small. I do hope its mother turns up but maybe someone has dumped it by your gate because they know you're English and we have a reputation for taking care of animals. Could you give it some kitten croquettes for the extra nourishment? Will you be returning there?

You could try setting the food down and then sit close by - about an arms length. When it comes to feed, do nothing. Repeat. Repeat but this time, put hand out about half way towards the dish and then onto the ground. Don't try and touch the kitten unless it comes to you. Be prepared for it to back off but sit with the hand out until it comes back and starts to eat again. Repeat. repeat but this time grab the kitten by the scruff - or any bit that you can get hold of.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I tried just sitting in the room well away from the cat with the food down but it would not come out. It is just young and scared.

I did not feed him since midday tried an exile move and sat a meter from the food and did my cat talk. He did come out to eat after a couple of peeks at me. Most of the time he could eat while watching me but a couple of times hunger got the better of him and the head was in the recycled water bottle food bowl. suein56 can we keep him not really as we are away more than we are here but im not about to kill him will try and catch him or her and find him a home. If you click the picture you can see the cat better

That's a much better photo. He's lovely but still very small. About the size of my last stray kitten but he had his mum. Maybe 2 months if that. It's good he came out while you were close by. He would gradually realise you were no threat but you'll probably have to leave before then. Will you be able to leave a supply of croquettes and water when you go?

Finding him/her a home would be splendid .. equally giving him to someone who would take the time to find him/her a good home.

Still alive it can now hiss and meeyaoo and it takes food from your hand. Have not tried grabbing him yet but have touched his tale which gave it a fright. No idea if its a boy or girl. Pictures are still crap but will get a better one soon.

When we were getting to know wild cats arriving here, we found that they were much more amenable to being touched on their heads and necks than their tails. If you can do that then you'll find the kitten will go limp when you take a grip on the scruff of its neck. Mother cats carry them around by picking them up there, so instinctively they don't resist.
What will you do then? Do you have any plan to take it to a vet/rescue home? If so you'll need to have a pet carrier at the ready to put the kitten in quickly, secure it safely and carry out your plan.
