The difference is that most car journeys are necessary, while most hunting is not. You say that but according to cernunnos if there was no hunters we would be over run with boars and probably bunnies as well. We have no rabbits here , the many foxes and pine martins have done with them . We do have ample wild boar that breed like rabbits and if not culled by the hunt would destroy all the farmland and crops that are used to feed the " people" !

Totally accept that damage from deer and boar is costly to farmers and earlier in the year I had to repair a large chunk of a client's garden that had suffered from a boar invasion. However, hunting alone using the current fairly crude methods cannot control the population explosion of both species so unless there are mass culls every year the problem will simply get worse.
My main gripe is the fact that La Chasse takes over the countryside every week for the best part of six months a year without any regard to the 98% who don't participate in any shape or form. I'm far from being 'anti hunt' and regularly took part in shoots in the UK but the main difference is that the shoots were always on private as opposed to public land so the impact on the general public was minimal.
I think most people in France understand and accept that hunting is part of French life but they just want a day or so a week when they can also enjoy the countryside.

Every commune publishes the duration of the season for each species, and the days that hunting is allowed. Ours are Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. That leaves 4 days a week when there may be the odd maverick outside of the Association who wanders around looking for hares or rabbits, but strictly no official hunting. If la Chasse is having trouble dealing with the sheer numbers of deer and boar, it's probably because the number of hunters is dwindling year on year, they're ageing and younger people are more interested in fiddling with a joystick

It's allowed from June to Feb (or March for sanglier), but only on the basis of an (occasional) organised battue with prior permission or the purchase of a bracelet permitting shooting of a deer. I suppose, in theory, they could have a battue in a different commune every day, although it's highly unlikely

Laying bait stations where there is contraception in the feed is the answer, if it is such a problem, however I think it is a chance to get out from under their wives feet and show some masculinity for a few hours and drink while doing.
Don't mind the going out but using it as an excuse for going out and drinking away from their family is the issue especially with guns.
Not my issue problem but call it as it is, if the wildlife needs to be controlled there are better methods than hunting, where animals can be injured and die a horrible death and the general public have to be on guard.

I have two voisines who hunt. One is in her 60s, the other in her late 20s. Doesn't really fit the stereotype, does it?

Getting it back to just mild irritation. Queueing up at the till, items all stashed on the belt, it's the woman in front turn to have all her items checked out. In the chariot it all returns but this time in her shopping bags, almost done and time to pay. Oh she thinks, I have to pay for my goods, now where's my purse, oh not enough cash, where's my card, where's my card!! OK I have a cheque book, give the cashier a cheque, now wants it signed and proven, look in the handbag, can't find any proof but hold on I have my permis. That will do Madam....the queue at till three has seen 5 or is it six customers file through and I am still in the queue at till number two. That is my dislike, shopping and waiting behind someone who appears to like to see steam coming out my ears. The strangest was one late afternoon in Leclerc when a woman spent ages doing this and then decided to talk with the cashier about her neighbour, who it finally appeared the cashier knew as well. After another long delay I politely asked if it would be OK if I could be served as I was in a hurry to get back to our resto. My accent obviously told them both I was a Britannique, so I was angrily informed that I should return there, this was around 2003. I was so close to mentioning that my Father was so welcomed in 1944 but a kick on the shins by my Wife also made me bite my tongue..et voila my dislike.

In over-populated countries where illiteracy is rife and media propaganda won't work, the same thing! Pop the pill in the rice or bread and problem solved

What sort of "contraception" would you propose for a 100 kilo plus wild boar ? Look up the history of La Chasse in France and then read up on what Chasseurs need to learn to get their permis. If you see any hunter that is drunk then report him to your local President of the chasse , because it is his responsibility and it is him that will be fined if one of his hunters does not keep to the law.
