At Curtis Up here it depends which store you use Intermarché in Saint Amand you get fruit and veg weighed at the till or automated one but at Auchan it's the way you described.

And I'm sitting in my car now and found on returning to the almost empty car park that there is a white van parked right next to me instead of one of the hundreds of other free spaces.
WTF?

Curtis wrote - 'But you usually have to weigh your fruit and veg before you go to the cashier anyway in most supermarchés. When you get to the auto cashier it's already weighed.'
Not in ours! So when we on occasions go to a different supermarche, I often get caught out because I haven't got my fruit and veg ready to be scanned at the checkout.

I can beat that. Many years ago we had a new car. Brand new. So we parked in the furthest corner of the car park, away from everyone. When we returned someone had put a skip next to our car. It was so close we couldn't open the drivers door. My husband had to climb in via the passenger door, which isn't easy when there is a console between the seats. Why do people do that. It's a mystery.
Ps. This is in answer to ForumUser2.

Does the auto cashier take cash? I doubt it very much. Fast forward another ten years. You just fill up your trolley with what you want and push it out to the car park. The items are auto scanned as you walk past the door along with your debit card. More jobs lost.

That would make it slower and defeat the object and take more time filling up and emptying the machines. I very seldom pay cash now. Even in the markets it's easy to pay "sans contact".

Even if it means walking a bit further, I always park where there are loads of empty spaces so that I can open the doors freely to get in or out and put the shopping in the back seat freely. Also,I don't want a ding from another car door. It always amazes me how, on many occasions, someone will want the space next to me,so I have to close the door, or want the space I am pulling out of before I have even closed the boot, even though there are plenty of other free spaces.

I cannot comment on the Charente Maritime but in the Cher and the Allier you have the cash payment option on the automated section.

Be careful in using the English language option on these - the prices can be more expensive which I discovered and angrily pointed out once…😡 I avoid them as much as I can, there’s stuff you need the machine itself to weigh and other stuff that gets weighed on seperate scales and it takes ages to locate said item on the vast display. Then the machine will get its knickers in a twist about something and a staff member has to reset it. Then it gives you a code to get out which has to be scanned in the right way up etc etc…..😳😳😳 Far simpler to let a cashier do it all…..

Also
Why is everything a crisis even when it's a mild inconvenience?
The NHS is in crisis as is Gaza and Ukraine. The Rwanda situation is NOT a crisis it is just the Tories' latest attempt at self-immolation - that's not a crisis. It's a comedy.

And another one.
Why, oh why, do commentators now use the term "median" when they mean average? Median does NOT mean average. "Mean" means average
Median is the mid-point in a distribution range.
