Anyone else know of such people? Only met one .. he is a Scot who has lived with a French woman as her lodger for 30 years. He has a carte vitale and nothing else - no titre de séjour, no driving licence tho he did drive about in France on a UK licence until it expired. His oap pension is paid into a UK account for which he has a card which he uses to withdraw €€ to pay for his bed and board. As he is 90smthg I am not sure he faces any immediate problems; after he dies that is going to be interesting. Not for him of course - he will be out of it. I'm 75, have lived here for 20 years and have just renewed my British driving license using a UK address. When do they start needing to have a Drs signature that what they declare is true .. re health, eyesight etc .. in the UK ?

It just so happens that I knew a former UK Tax inspector living here, now deceased, who was president of the local branch of AVF and who was often in touch with the local inspector. Guess you know what he was told concerning PSB gains! For the record to the best of my knowledge I have paid whatever is due by way of impots both in France and the UK. Elsie - the problem I have is that the PSB draw is described as a lottery, so I can't justify redefining it to suit the arguments put forward. The prize pot is a calculation of amount the government deems appropriate for the prize draw.

mangetout, I was of the thought that due to Brexit everyone deciding to live in France could apply for a Titre de Sejour, so I believed that the Impots would be told of all people now claiming to be resident. Is that now a myth, as I know two couples with T de S's who I asked today if they had filled in their tax forms. They looked at me and said, No we haven't received any forms, nor last year. Seems incredible or mybe they were just saying what they did but I think not?

At the start of premium bond savings in 1956, I bought a £1 ticket from my pocket money. That’s the last I saw of that.

Read mangetout's story about her ISAs that she thought were tax free but her bank informed impots and she got stuck with a 10k bill. Google " are premium Bond winnings taxable in France" it's worth reading

The prize pot is a calculation of amount the government deems appropriate for the prize draw. It isn't taffy's interpretation which is definitive. If you've declared your French address and TIN (tax identification number) to NS&I they will report your bond interest and premium bond winnings to France impôts annually. The fisc will check for anomalies between those figures and the tax declaration.

My OH suffers the same fate .. a kindly aunt/uncle bought him a £5 Premium Bond in the early days and it has never won a penny. I had an early £10 Bond like that too - so I cashed it in in the 1970's, added to it, and achieved a minor success of £25 some years later.

It makes you wonder whether the old ones are just lost in the ether.

Years ago we had £17 of bonds that did nothing so we cashed them in.We now have a substantial holding now that is doing pretty well even if we do have to pay tax.

I have a vague memory of seeing some bonds in my childhood, but have no idea what happened to them nor even whose they were. I expect at some point someone threw them away, but no one has ever been in touch to say I've won a fortune. Name and address changes would no doubt make me virtually impossible to trace all these years later.

You can ask the Prem Bond headquarters if they can trace them .. apparently they do this regularly. Tho you might need to rack your brains re some of the questions they might ask you in order to establish who you are and where you lived in the past. Could be interesting .. or not.
