Barbecue tonight, now the sun has decided to stick around for a few days. Lamb, pork, chipos and merguez. With a green salad and tomatoes.

Fresh haddock with sautee potatoes, a squeeze of lemon and a touch of tartare sauce. Followed by ice cream (though not cooked).

I’m having a couple of days off, being cosseted a little; trying to decide what to order for dinner later on this very warm, still evening. If I weren’t at this hotel I’d enjoy either FFS’s or Veem’s menus.

Yes Veem, cold or toasted with butter - and jam! I also love them with butter and cheese. ....and of course, they are an essential component of an Ulster fry - fried in bacon fat.....yummmm... Just googled 'scottish pancakes' and they look the same, but the recipe isn't NI pancakes are made with buttermilk and bicarbonate of soda, which gives them a totally different taste.

They sound wonderfully unhealthy! I shall be fancying some for days now ............ I just remembered, my Scottish friend's mother used to make them too and called them drop scones. I googled that and it said they are the same as scotch pancakes.

They aren't difficult to make and the scottish version doesn't need any ingredients that you won't usually have already in your cupboard. ...and if you want to try the NI version, you've still no excuses, because the Intermarche in Confolens is one of the few who stock buttermilk.

The wonderful Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has some great recipes and he talks about substituting yogurt instead of buttermilk in things like soda bread so I wonder if that would work for your NI pancakes Crystal

I think I should pop into yours to taste a few first to decide if it's worth me investing in buttermilk!

For breakfast we had a meal created in 1979 by our 18 month old son . It is fried bacon in a croissant. Created in Kirgoad Vihan when Anne asked him what he wanted with his croissant for breakfast.

Considering the temperature this will give you all a good laugh, we finally cooked the Christmas turkey. Or at least the half I didn’t cook at Christmas as no one could come and I chopped in in two. Daughter’s birthday celebration, just a few roasties, pigs in blankets, stuffing, a few veg and gravy. I was worried about it still sitting in the freezer next Christmas and I think meat deteriorates a little bit in the frozen state. Inside it was cool enough to enjoy, before repairing to a shady part of the garden for cake.

Then you'd better come first thing in the morning because there'll be none left by lunch time tomorrow! - that's why I don't bake often - all that work and it's all gone in a blink of an eye!
