If i was to install one of the said devices, which wood it be now, I was going pellet, but people on here have said the rise in pellet cost is far greater than the rise in firewood, is either better on the environment?

There is now a shortage of pellets so be careful, plus the price of available pellets has risen dramatically.

Been looking at buying a pallet of pellets and the prices on the internet vary considerably from €200 - €600. We usually buy on a piecemeal basis but we have the storage capacity now. Totally confused.
I would say if it is for your main heating and you don’t have your own firewood supply then I would plump for a pellet burner.

A wood burner , will burn anything . We heat our water with ours , takes four pieces of pallet wood and paper that comes free in the post . Our neighbours spent €15,000 installing two pellet burners , now wishes he hadn't, asking me , "if I will do firewood for him "!

Round here the shortage of pellets is artificial as they are being stocked in huge warehouses and held back until the price rises again; currently a single bag is 9.95€. The person I chatted to who has contacts in the business reckons they will hold onto them until it reaches 15€ a bag! Now, why can’t the sacred Macron nobble those prices too?

Usually a pallet consists of 72 bags of 15k - would def last all winter and would hope to have some left over. Not sure really as we have been buying them as needed but in very cold weather we get through 3 bags a week. Our house is single storey, 125 sq m and very well insulated so the pellet burner heats the whole house.

Don't forget that pellet burners need electricity to function.

Don't forget that pellet burners need electricity to function. Yes but not very much and provides a fan function to distribute the heat (unlike a wood-burner) and the ability to program on and off times.

Which environment? I think it is an extremely difficult question to answer in an unbiased way There are lots of businesses and consumption of energy involved in the production and distribution of wood pellets. These may have a net negative effect upon the global environment. Although, it an be argued that wood can be used that would have otherwise been wasted I am not sure about this.

Anything transported over long distance and packed in plastic bags will be more environment unfriendly than a product sourced locally . Same sort of thing as electric cars being " better" for " our" environment .

There is a large site along the N12 not far from here that appeared to be a source of firewood logs. Huge stacks of lengths drying outside waiting to be cut into burning logs. No logs lately, just huge piles of pellets to take advantage of price rises.

Yes but not very much and provides a fan function to distribute the heat (unlike a wood-burner) and the ability to program on and off times. Our woodburner also has a fan. If I want to program on and off times I can add a €3.99 wall plug timer to do that.
